My summer Camp
I believe that summer camp is one of those things that we, teenagers do the most during summer vacation, either going to other countries or just stay in China.
No matter what kind of summer camps they are, they enrich our spare time during the summer.
In the past few years, I’ve been to some summer camps in the U.S. and all of them are math camps.
Today, I want to introduce two of those programs, CTY and AwesomeMath.
1CTY天才营
CTY stands for Center for Talented Youth, which gathers students around the world.
There are two main subjects that this camp focus on.
One is language development, including debate, public speech etc.
The other one is more focused on math, science, biology etc.
I went there for developing Math while what also impressed me when I lived there (by the way, it is a residential camp) was the warm atmosphere there.
Even though the students there all came from different places around the world, we soon got familiar with each other and became friends.
There are many after-school activities there.
Students can choose to do sports, play cards, and read books etc.
The camp also held two dancing parties which was very exciting.
The life there was not boring at all.
The math skills I learned there was also pretty different compared to what I learned in China.
There were both knowledge that I was very familiar with and knowledge that I never heard of, since CTY used a different textbook.
What I learned the most there, however, was not the math itself, but the different perspectives of looking at a problem.
When presented with a math problem during the camp, students discussed about it and used different ways to solve it.
For one question, there could be more than ten correct ways of solving it.
This connection and communication is really precious.
The summer camp widened and changed my way of looking at problem solving.
2AwesomeMath 神奇的数学
Compared to CTY, AwesomeMath was much harder and more challenging.
It is an academic camp only focusing on the subject of math.
Students around the world, 13-16 years old, gathered there.
The math problems were much harder compared to CTY.
Students attending the camp can choose two subjects to study including geometry, math theory, algebra etc.
There are different math levels there that students can choose from.
Everybody can select the difficulty level that suits themselves.
The teachers at the camp came from different parts of the world and have different skills and perspecitves on solving problems.
There was plenty free time at this summer camp for students to just exercise and do what they want to do.
Since the summer camp is residential, students are living together and are able to discuss about math even in the evening.
There are teacher assistants living together with students helping them improve their math skills.
This summer camp improved my problem solving skills a lot.
Those new knowledges gained helped me not only during the summer camp, but also after I came back.
I also brought two math books there.
They are both written in English and are very helpful in terms of gaining further knowledge about specific topics.
Those are the two summer camps I am sharing with you today.
Hope all of you can find the summer camp you want to go.
