1Why study literature?
These courses aredesigned to develop students’ academic reading, academic writing, critical thinking, organizational and study skills. For students planning to study abroad in an English environment, these are vital skills they will need if they are to be successful.
Study Skills
As part of all three levels, students will learn and practice a number of study skills:
· time management
· summarizing
· note taking (with Cornell Notes)
· goal setting
Curriculum Standards
All three levels are also designed to cover as much of the American Common Core Standards for English Language Arts as possible.

2 What do we learn?
Three coursesare offered in literature class (Introductory, intermediate and advanced). Students need to take a written test first and will be directed to different course. Each term different classes are offered specific reading materials, so students should check the latest schedule.
文学课总共有三个班-初级,中级和高级。不同阶段所学习的文学作品不同,所以入班前需要做入班测试。每个学期针对不同班级都会有不同的文学作品阅读,以下是参考,具体学习书籍需要查看最新的课程信息。
/ Introductory Course
Book1 - Matilida by RoaldDahl.
Book2 - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl.

▼BOOK 2 The language focus of the course is mostly on vocabulary acquisitionand on an introduction of the skills necessary for students to continue acquiring vocabulary efficiently on their own. This includes proper dictionary use, as well as strategies to identify and remember useful vocabulary.
The literature component aims to provide a foundational understanding of the core elements of literature: plot, character, and setting. There are two short writing assignments (1-2 paragraphs) and one longer essay (about 300words) in the course, which allows students to get valuable practice and feedback on their academic writing skills.
这门课的语言重点主要是在单词认知以及在自己独立掌握单词的技巧上。这其中包括了合适字典的使用,和有策略的去辨识记忆有用的词汇。
文学目标是为了去提供一个对于核心成分的基础理解:情节,角色以及背景。整个课程有2篇短的写作任务(1-2个段),和一篇长文章(300字左右),是为了让学生在学术写作技能上,能得到有效的练习和反馈。
/ Intermediate Course
Book1- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling.
Book2- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling
Book3- The LightningThief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1), by Rick Riordan The language focus of this course is on more vocabulary acquisition techniques rather than merely vocabulary, as well as issues of connotation and word choice.
The literature component moves into a more advanced discussion of plot,character and setting, and adds elements of theme, metaphor, description, and foreshadowing. Writing will consist of two essays of 300-500 words, both of which students will be expected to revise after receiving detailed feedback from the teacher.
这门课的语言重点主要是更多单词的学习技巧而不只是基础词汇,还有词语的衔接以及词语的使用。
文学目标是对于情节,人物和背景进行更深层面的讨论,并且加入主题,隐喻,描述,成分,伏笔的成分,以及一些单词的含义。写作包括2篇300-500字的文章,并且要求学生需要通过老师给的反馈自己完成细节修改。
Advanced Course

▼ BOOK 2 This course will revisit all of the elements covered in the previous two courses – plot, character, setting, theme, and metaphor – but with a muchheavier emphasis on theme and symbolism. The main goal of this course is to develop an understanding of fiction as social commentary, and of the ways in which writers can use symbolism and metaphor in fiction to examine or discuss complex issues in the real world.
The language component will include refining and honing the vocabulary acquisition and study skills introduced in previous courses, but will emphasize developing an understanding of figurative language, contextual influence, tone,register, and symbolism. Students will learn how to interpret implicit as wellas explicit meanings in a text.
This course in particular will also promote the development of speaking skills, as discussion is a major element in the course.
For the writing component, students will be expected to write 2 essays of at least 500 words examining a specific textual element in detail. They will also be expected to revise these essays after receiving detailed feedback from the teacher.
这门课的重点主要是去巩固之前两个阶段学过的所有成分—情节,人物,背景,主题,隐喻,伏笔,但是会强调主题和象征意义。
这门课的语言重点会包括提取和消化单词,并且学习之前课程里介绍的方法,但是会更加注重修辞方法的理解,上下文的联系,语气,语域,以及象征。学生会学习怎么样去解释文本外在和内含的意思。
对于写作要求,学生会要写2篇不少于500字对于书本内容细节的点评,也要对老师给他们的反馈进行细节修改。
