A brief Introduction
1Why study history?
Studying history increases the subject specific knowledge as well as the general knowledge which is useful in academic as well as in social context.
Additionally those studying history gain increased analytical skills and learn how to conduct research and where to find sources.
The intellectual and linguistic precision necessary in history pushes students to sharpen their argumentative skills and to get used to employing a proper style in essay crafting.
The abilities in presentation and oration benefit as well from active participation in a history course.
The core benefit of the study of history however still is that it does enable students to gain a deeper understanding of why people do things and how they do them, a knowledge that is applicable in one’s own life.

2Which history to study?
There are several options available for students who want to take a course in history. Each term different classes are offered, so students should check the current schedule. The history courses offered continuously are:
Ancient Era, Postclassic Era, Early Modern Period, Late Modern Period, Rome, National-Socialism & World War 2, AP World History, AP European History.

Ancient Era
The Ancient Era covers the first civilisations, the rise of Greek culture and the Greek city states as well as the transformation of Rome, from the Roman Kingdom to the Roman Republic and finally the Roman Empire.
古典时期
包括文明起源,希腊文明的发展,希腊城邦;罗马的形成,罗马王国,罗马共和国到罗马帝国
Postclassic Era
The content taught in the Postclassic Era includes the rise of Christianity and Islam, the crusades, Feudalism in Europe and Asia, the Viking Age and the dawn of the Renaissance.
后古典时期
包括基督教和伊斯兰教的兴起,十字军东征,欧亚的封建主义,维京时代以及文艺复兴的出现
Early Modern Period
This course focuses on the Renaissance, the Protestant Reformation and Catholic Counter-Reformation, the Thirty Year’s War, the English Monarchy, rise of Prussia, the Age of Exploration and East-Asia during the Ming China

Late Modern Period
Topics of this time include the American Revolution, the US Civil War, the Bismarck & the Meiji Era, Imperialism and the World Wars and more recently the the Cold War and current geopolitics.

Rome
This course covers the founding of Rome, the end of the kingdom & rise of the republic, the Roman legions and the Punic Wars, Caesar’s rise, the end of the republic and the dawn of the empire as well as Roman culture, philosophy and literature.

National-Socialism & WW2
Main topics are Hitler’s rise, NS ideology, the changes from Weimar Republic to Third Reich, NS rule before the war, NS organizations, the Jewish Question, World War 2 & its main events.

AP World History
This course does cover essentially all relevant eras, events, concepts, items, personalities & anything else students are supposed to know about the history of the world, more specifically for passing the AP exam of the US College Board.

AP European History
This course is more or less identical with AP World History, but the topics are limited to European history of the past 500 years.

3Who teaches history?
Marc Holsan, graduate of Bonn University and former LCpl, German Air Force.
He holds a pre-degree in Japanese Science and a B.A. in History as well as Latin & Ancient Greek Language and Literature. Besides history he offers classes in Latin, German and debating.
Living in China since 2013 he has previously taught at 杭州英特外國語學校 as well as 杭州外國語學校.
His hobbies are fencing and chess. His favourite books are Bret E. Ellis’s American Psycho and Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose.
跟谁学?

4How to prepare for history?
In order to get a good overview of history as well as to gain deeper knowledge of the details of history there are two very useful tools: text and video.
More specifically, text refers to the reading of books and journals and video means watching documentaries and online video channels but also historical movies and TV series.
如何准备?
