English Language Proficiency

Georgia Tech is a lively and collaborative atmosphere, and it is imperative that students have the ability to contribute to classroom discussions and engage in the Georgia Tech community outside of the classroom. We ask that non-native English speakers demonstrate English proficiency through the application process. While there is no particular requirement, many applicants choose to submit one of the following supplements to their application:

• Unscripted, third-party Interview (InitialView and Vericant)
• TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge English Assessment
• Duolingo English Test

Language Proficiency Testing Policy

All NYU students must have a strong command of the English language to be successful in a fast-paced, rigorous academic environment. If English is not your native language, and you are applying to our New York campus, you may be asked to submit results from one of the following English language proficiency examinations:

IELTS Academic (International English Language Testing System)

PTE Academic (Pearsons Test of English Academic)

How do I know if I need to take a language proficiency test?

You do not need to if:

English is your native language; or you already completed (at the time of application submission) at least 3 or more consecutive, full academic years at a school/university where the sole language of instruction was English.

English Language Testing

English language testing is required for students for whom English is not the primary language and not the language of instruction in their secondary school. Students with at least three years of study in a secondary school where the primary language is English do not need to submit English language testing, though they may if they would like. English Language Tests

All non-US citizens and non-permanent resident students for whom English is not their first language must submit test scores to demonstrate their English proficiency. We will accept the TOEFL, IELTS or PTE. Our TOEFL code is C182.

TOEFL – strong applicants typically score 100 or higher

IELTS – strong applicants typically score 7.0 or higher

PTE – strong applicants typically score 68

We do not waive this score requirement based on grades in English courses or SAT/ACT scores. If you have lived in an English-speaking country or have attended an English-speaking school for more than four years, we may waive this requirement. To request this waiver, email us at unchelp@admissions.unc.edu with a description of your circumstances. Waivers are granted on a case-by-case basis.

Students who have had less than three years of instruction in English will need to demonstrate English proficiency. This can be done in any of the following ways:

• Score 3, 4 or 5 on the AP examination in English Language and Composition, or English Literature and Composition

The University of Florida requires proficiency in spoken and written English. Though not required, it is strongly recommended that applicants whose first language is not English or are not attending an English-speaking school submit an official score report of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Scores must be reported directly to the University of Florida.

Minimum acceptable scores：
