This should come as no surprise to the high schoolers, but for all the rest of you, have you seen what’s been going on at SAS’s high school buildings? That’s right, over summer break, the art space and student commons underwent some intensive renovations, most notably that they’ve switched places with each other. The new art space is where the old commons was, while the new commons is now at the old art space.
“The switch made sense, first and foremost because the art space now enjoys a lot more space, and also because it joins the Innovation Institute and the MakerSpace in one centralized location,” said Scott Mimnaugh, Dean of Students at our Puxi High School. “The new STEAM department is located close by too.”
“新的STEAM(科学、技术、工程、艺术、数学)部门也在附近。”
Student Commons
The previous student commons, while great for socialization, lacked opportunities for presentations and for those students looking to do some quiet study. The new space is much more open, with a dedicated presentation space that mimics the one available on the Pudong campus. The building’s entrance was also shifted east to make way for a café kiosk, affectionately dubbed Café ’20 in honor of the graduating class of 2020.
“We’ve been very intentional in the way we set up this area,” said Mr. Mimnaugh. “The space starts from the café – the part of the floor that generates the most noise and encourages the most casual socialization – and flows past the main entrance to the presentation space, where communal tables and group seating offer opportunities for collaborative work and discussion, ending in the far right where it starts to get quieter and more independent so students who want to work on assignments on their own have a space to do so.”
Administrative, nurses’ and counselors’ offices are now centralized and located towards the back so that they remain easily accessible and an integrated part of the high school, while at the same time offer more privacy.
Art Space
In the building across, the art space incorporates a mix of wider, more open areas with individual and smaller group spaces that all come together to foster innovative teaching, student collaboration and mixed groups from multiple classes. Everything is multi-use – from micro-studios that double as exhibit space, to a soundproof work room that can also be used as a presentation space.
“While we’ve set up different studios and areas for different use, including a soundproof room that students can go into if they have to use noisier tools and machinery, we’ve purposefully made sure we’re using open shelves, glass dividers, perforated walls to really promote that sense of collaboration. There’s still some degree of separation, but we’ve made sure that it also allows transparency and openness, which is what Shanghai American School is all about,” explained Mr. Mimnaugh.
The high school student commons and art space join a list of renovations we’ve been doing to better help us connect and continue to intentionally strengthen our sense of community, the latest of which includes our SAS Hub Library, which we renovated a year ago and recently nabbed us a Silver Citation fromAmerican School & Universities.
SAS’s status as a not-for-profit school means that we are always finding opportunities to reinvest our community’s investment right back into the school so that our facilities remain top-notched and our students always enjoy the best that we can offer.
