Three Minutes With Our Three New VPs 三分钟了解我们的三位新任副校长

This year, we welcome three senior faculty members - Kathy Faulkner, new VP for Elementary School Puxi, Charmagne Braden, new VP for Middle School Pudong, and Kristen Dickhaut, new VP for High School Pudong. We managed to squeeze in a quick chat with all three between their jam-packed schedules as they busy themselves with preparations for the first week of school.

Where were you before SAS?

在来到上海美国学校之前您在哪里任职？

I spent three years as an assistant principal at Yongsan International School in Seoul, South Korea. Before that, I was in Phoenix, Arizona. I’ve been in various leadership roles for the past 12 years.

我在韩国首尔龙山国际学校担任了三年的助理校长。在那之前，我在亚利桑那州的凤凰城。在过去的12年里，我担任过多种领导职务。

“The courage to live their dreams” resonated the strongest with me. Much of the school experience revolves around supporting the students, be it from the academic side, the creative side, as well as the social emotional side. This statement really shows that here at SAS, we support students in all endeavors through all the different parts that make them who they are. It really sets the bar and sends the message that we care about who our students are - their passions and interests - and that we are dedicated to supporting and helping them achieve their dreams.

“追求梦想的勇气”这一点我最有感触。大部分的学校事务都围绕着从学术方面，创造性方面，以及社会情感方面支持学生。这一使命明确表明，在上海美国学校，我们不遗余力帮助学生处理克服种种情况，支持他们成就自我。这是我们工作的标准，它传递了这样的信息：我们关心学生的热情和兴趣，我们要致力于支持和帮助他们实现梦想。

Tell us your most memorable moment from your own first week at school (either as a student or an educator).

请告诉我们您在学校第一周最难忘的时刻（无论是作为学生还是教育工作者）。

The first week of my senior year of high school was hard for me. My family had just moved so I was starting in a brand new school with no friends. That experience made me realize now, as an educator, how important it is to support our new students and to ensure we are setting up processes to make sure they are successful that first couple of weeks, to make sure that they have a buddy or a friend, and that they know what’s going on, because I’ve been in that same situation.

我的高三第一周很艰难。我和家人们初来乍到，我在新学校也没有朋友。因为这份经历，我意识到作为一名教育工作者，重要的是要支持新来的学生，确保我们能帮助他们顺利度过开学几周，确保他们能交到朋友，并且让他们知道自己在经历什么。

What do you like to do outside of work?

工作之余您喜欢做什么？

I like being creative and that can be manifested in various ways - I love cooking and trying new recipes, painting and art projects.

我喜欢多种形式的创新——烹饪、尝试新的食谱、绘画和艺术项目。

Where were you before SAS?

在来到上海美国学校之前您在哪里任职？

I was head of Teaching and Learning at Harare International School in Zimbabwe the past three years. Before Zimbabwe, we spent time in Colorado, Saudi Arabia and Mexico City.

I feel very strongly about engaging with each other with kindness, so “a commitment to act with integrity and compassion” really spoke to me. Our actions should reflect what we believe and what we believe should be reflected by our actions. A lot of that has to do with our integrity as people, how we treat each other, and I think in many ways, if you begin with integrity and compassion as a foundational piece of who you are, in many ways it makes it easier to pursue your dreams, and to engage in that lifelong passion for learning.

我非常赞同友好互助，所以“诚信与仁爱的信念”是我比较认同的。我们的行为应该反映自己的信仰，而我们的信仰会体现在行动中。这关系到诚信以及如何对待他人；我认为，如果你秉持诚信与仁爱的基本信念，那么在许多方面你离梦想更近了，而且这会激励你对终身学习保持热情。

Tell us your most memorable moment from your own first week at school (either as a student or an educator).

请告诉我们您在学校第一周最难忘的时刻（无论是作为学生还是教育工作者）。

Instead of a memorable moment, it was more a memorable feeling. This first week at SAS, I’ve really felt this sense of community. And I think this feeling, while isn’t one moment in time, is almost more important to me than a singular moment, because of this ongoing sense of who we are as a school, how people treat and interact with one another - it’s this constant feeling of a welcoming and inviting community where people are really striving to inspire all the students.

与其说是难忘的时刻，倒不如说是难忘的感受。在上海美国学校的第一周，我真的体会到了这种社区集体感。我认为这种感觉，虽然并非某一刻，但对我来说几乎比任何时刻更重要；我们作为一所学校的使命，对待彼此的方式，与他人的互动之道——这些让我体会到这里是一个热情而具有吸引力的集体，在这里我们努力激励所有的学生。

What do you like to do outside of work?

I love traveling, something I’m sure most international educators gravitate towards. I enjoy an interesting range of passions - I love to hike and do yoga, baking, and I also really enjoy puzzles - it’s a good mix of introverted and extroverted hobbies.

我喜欢旅游，相信大多数国际教育工作者都喜欢旅游。我的兴趣广泛——喜欢徒步旅行，瑜伽，烘焙，我也很喜欢拼图——这是一系列内外兼修的爱好。

Before coming to SAS, I worked at SEK-Dublin International School in Greystones, Ireland.

“The courage to live their dreams” sends such a great message. Eleanor Roosevelt once said that “you gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do.” - it’s one of my favorite quotes and really reflects what SAS aspires to inspire in our students.

“追求梦想的勇气”这很伟大。Eleanor Roosevelt曾经说过：“当你每一次真正停下来去面对恐惧时，你会收获力量、勇气和信心。你必须做你认为自己做不到的事。”——这是我最喜欢的一句话，它真正反映了上海美国学校对学生的激励。

During my first week in Dublin, we had a hurricane for the first time in thirty years. Thenright before school reopened, we were gearing up for Typhoon Leikima!

我在都柏林的第一周遭遇了三十年来未碰到过的飓风。而就在学校开学前，我们正在准备迎接台风利奇马！

What do you like to do outside of work?

工作之余您喜欢做什么？

I love traveling, as well as photography. I keep active through various sports.

我喜欢旅行和摄影，经常参加各种运动。
