The restoration of old buildings in major cities in the world costs numerous governments’ expenditure. This money should be used in new housing and road development.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is argued that the expenditure by the government in some metropolises should be allocated to the construction of new houses and roads instead of the maintenance of old buildings. Although there are some positive influences if new houses and roads are funded, I still believe that old buildings deserve financial investment.

Undeniably, it is essential to spend money on new housing and road development because citizens’ living environment and life satisfaction can be improved. With more new apartment blocks constructed,people will no longer face housing shortages caused by population expansion. At the same time, traffic congestion is not a public concern as more roads enable drivers to reach their destinations through different routes.

On the other hand, however, investing in there storation of historical buildings in large cities is of considerable importance because this is an effective way to preserve art, culture and history. It is a fact that many old buildings have been demolished due to the lack of protection, meaning that the artistic, cultural and historical value associated with them have disappeared as well. In contrast, with financial support from the government, these constructions can be well maintained in order to assists people, be they natives or travelers, in having an appreciation of the elements mentioned, and also serve as a venue where future generations are educated.

In addition, if insufficient funds were given to preserve old buildings, local economic growth could be impeded. Modern travelers are unwilling to visit a particular place without any character.These buildings, however, can become tourist spots used to attract visitors after a programme of regular maintenance in place. Consequently, those cities can not only benefit from charging travelers for admission fees, but also from the amount of money they spend on a wide range of items, such as accommodation,food and souvenirs.

In conclusion, I disagree that the funds should be diverted from the preservation of historical buildings because the ignorance of restoring old buildings can result in a loss of some art, culture and history, and also prevent the progress of the economy. However, I admit that there is necessity to give funding to new housing and road development.
