Josephine Chow, Class of ’22, Shanghai American School, Puxi Campus
Josephine Chow
We hear you have some varied interests that people wouldn’t normally think go together. Can you tell us about these?
Yes! I admit my interests are not the type most people would pair up. I play the oboe at school and am a part of the Symphony Orchestra. I also practice the flute at home and take music exams. Along with this, I also swim and play volleyball. I also love learning math and science, since I am a member of both the AoPS club and the Biology club.
What do these different interests each add to your life?
These interests altogether bring happiness. What I love about interests and skills is that you can never fully complete it like a finished puzzle. You just have to keep going and going, and continue to grow, because there is no end. In other words, all these activities add joy to my life. It also gave me discipline and appreciation of the learning process.
Do you ever feel pressure to choose between them and just haveonething you love? If so, where does that pressure come from?
As a person, I change, but one thing is for certain: I will always have a love of learning. These activities I currently have are the outcome of a love of trying new activities. As I change, the activities I do will also change.
What do you think might be some benefits to being a multi-faceted person?
The benefit of being multi-faceted is that you are not as afraid to drop out of a team or club that you don't like or you lost interest in. That's becauseyou still have other skills that you may like more. This can help because you get to spend more time doing what you like. Another benefit is that you get to really experience what different activities feel like, and possibly even find your talents. Say that you only play the trumpet. You'll never know if you have a talent for singing or acting or doing sports. Being a multi-faceted person can help you discover who you really are, and what you are interested in.
If you were limited, and could only do one, how do you think this would change you as a person?
I honestly cannot imagine myself only having one interest, because again, the interests I had were the result of the love of learning. Having only one interest means that I may not even have the trait of curiosity, which would completely change me as a person. I would only do things in my comfort zone, which would mean missing out on a great deal of opportunities.
