In order to declare the Communication major, students must have completed, or be currently enrolled in, one of the following:

1.  COMM 1A - Media Technologies, People, and Society, or Comm 1B – Media, Culture, and Society

2.  COMM 106 – Communication Research Methods

3.  COMM 108 – Media Processes and Effects

Once the prerequisites have been met, prospective majors should declare via Axess and then email the Student Services Manager  to set up an appointment to complete the minimal paperwork, to be assigned an advisor and to discuss any questions they may have.

Transfer Students

Required Communication courses usually must be taken at Stanford. No more than 10 units of transfer credit may be applied to meet departmental requirements for majors, and no more than 5 credits for minors.

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions asks transfer students to furnish an official transcript, which is evaluated by the University. Students who transfer to Stanford and enter the Department of Communication should know that the only Communication courses likely to be waived are Communication 1A or Communication 1B.

In recent years the admit rate for transfer students has ranged from one to four percent. Between twenty and fifty transfer student spaces are typically available each year

For the 2013–14 admission cycle the Office of Undergraduate Admission will offer an optional alumni interview to applicants attending high school in Atlanta, Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia, Raleigh/Durham, Washington, D.C.; the states of Colorado, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oregon, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming; as well as Ireland and the UK. New interview areas will be added gradually over the next several years.

Interviews will be offered only to applicants who attend high school in selected zip codes within these areas. You may nottravel to an interview area to have an interview.

If you are eligible to be a part of the alumni interview program, an alumnus or alumna will contact you after you have submitted your application. You do not need to do anything—if an interview is available to you, you will hear from us. Please do not call or email the Office of Undergraduate Admission to request an interview or to find out if you are eligible for an interview.

Although we will make every effort to offer an interview to all eligible applicants in the interview areas, please understand that due to limited resources in some areas, interviews may not be available to every candidate. Your application to Stanford will be considered complete with or without an interview.

Incoming transfer students are allowed to transfer a maximum of 90 quarter units (roughly two years of full-time college or university study) to Stanford

Please log into your UChicago account to make a request. Please note that while we will do our best to accommodate requests, due to alumni availability, we cannot guarantee interviews to all students who request them. Also, an interview is a completely optional portion of the application, and not receiving an interview will not negatively affect your application.

The most successful applicants will have a minimum college GPA of 3.7 in a challenging academic program.  Of those admitted in 2013, the mid-50% had SAT I critical reading scores between 650-750, math scores between 670-770 and writing scores between 670-800.

Every fall, approximately 35 students transfer into either the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences or the Pratt School of Engineering.

We recommend that prospective transfer students take a variety of mathematics and science courses before applying. This includes one year each of college-level calculus and calculus-based physics, and one semester each of biology and chemistry. If you received advanced placement from high school courses, then you should enroll in the appropriate level for each of the disciplines mentioned above.
