Keynote Presentation& Workshops (Partial)
Keynote
Building Social Capital:One Key Driver inCreating Effective Schools
Jennifer Abrams
International Educational and Communications Consultant
Research tells us social capital and collective efficacy are key factors in moving our schools forward. Yet we often don't have the credentials and qualifications to execute this research as effectively as we'd like. What does it mean to communicate well with the adults with whom we work? This keynote will provide some insight into key cognitive, social and psychological mindsets and skills that will help you communicate more collaboratively, and more productively, to better support the students we serve.
The Brain and Learning:What Teachers and Students Need to Know
Carol Koran, B.Ed; M.E
Director of Learning at Nishimachi International School in Tokyo
If learning is truly a collaborative endeavor, then it only makes sense that teachers and students should have a mutual understanding of how the brain learns and processes information. The challenge for teachers is to determine not only which current neuroscience research is valid for their context, but how to translate this knowledge into strategies and approaches that will have the greatest impact on student learning. In this presentation Carol will explore the basics of brain-based learning, the role of nutrition and sleep, stress and its effect on learning and the unique qualities of children’s brains as they grow from primary to middle and high school.

What, so what, now what:Si Mian Ba Fang (SMBF) andProfessional Learning Centre- an approach to improveteaching and learning
Min (Caroline) Xu
Deputy Head (Academics) of YK Pao School
As a high-achieving, bilingual Chinese-English, IB World School of more than 1,400 students, YK Pao School has been empowering both Chinese and international students’ learning through careful curriculum planning, designed teaching and learning pedagogy, and a professional support system.Working through thenecessary 'what’ is the appropriate pedagogy for Pao School students to enjoy and engage in learning, to 'so what?' the process of inquiry and reflection of our current practice, to mapping out the ‘now what?’ responses and action points, a ‘balanced’ Si Mian Ba Fang (SMBF) framework was developed, implemented across campuses, and strengthened by “looking for learning” open-classroom walk-throughs. Now SMBF has been linked to wider Professional Learning Center coach programs, the learning course setting and the “teaching to excellence” standards setting.
This interactive presentation will share some of the main, practical takeaways for teachers & leaders regarding system building and the changing of school culture, with a focus on leading high-quality teaching and learning in an intercultural context.
Customized Learning Communities -One Size does NOT fit all
Renee Rehfeldt
Director of Learning at Canadian Academy, Kobe, Japan
We know collaboration is key to moving a school forward. Increasingly, it is at the heart of our work as leaders – nurturing authentic collaboration with meaningful outcomes. There are varied models and opinions on how to organize learning communities. How does a school decide which model is best? Many schools will find that an integrated approach, drawing aspects from each to suit their culture and needs, is key. Join us as we unpack professional learning community models and data protocols to understand the components of each and how they can work together in support of student learning and wellbeing.Participants will examine an overview of the variety of professional learning community models, including data driven dialogue, collaborative protocol to guide conversations, and the DuFour 4 guiding questions. I will not advocate for any single model but rather provide an overview of the essential elements of each. We will then discuss how and when each could be useful in a school context and how they might weave together to achieve strategic goals and transform learning and wellbeing. No school’s model must mirror another; each should reflect the culture and needs of the school, and be adaptable when the need arises.
