Shanghai Maple Leaf----A Place for Dreams Coming True
In a blink of an eye, I have been to Shanghai Maple Leaf International School for three months already. From the humid days of summer to the chills of winter, the temperature has dropped outside, but my life at Maple Leaf is still fiery hot. Without realizing it, I’ve grown up so much in my short time here!
Just like there are no two identical leaves in the world, each of us is unique in this world. When I first came to Maple Leaf to study, the most distinctive thing I came upon was how English is taught here. The school divides into three to six classes according to the different English levels of each student, and makes a real effort to "teach students according to their aptitude." Everyday in English class, I not only learn but also get to have fun with classmates. You see, each lesson starts accompanied by the melody of beautiful English songs, aimed towards practicing our listening and improving our appreciation of music. Today, we listened to a beautiful song titled "See You Again"! After singing, a student will go up to give a pre-class talk, and that has made each of us more confident in public speaking and wonderful speech givers. About a week ago, after careful preparation, I built up the courage to go to the stage myself to give a speech entitled “My Family” in English, and I got the perfect score! It excited me so much when I realized I could do it too!
Education that is implemented from the heart uses love to nourish the students, and uses real emotions to enlighten them. Every day, the English teacher walks into our class cheerfully, looking at us with kind eyes before beginning our learning for the day. In order to not let the classroom become the teacher's one-man show, he often lets everyone read the text in a role, allowing everyone to learn through participation, which greatly mobilizes the enthusiasm of the students. As he explains the text, he always writes so many synonyms and antonyms on the blackboard, which not only expands our vocabulary, but he also reads them over and over again watching our mouths, and then corrects each student. The most important thing is that no classmate is left behind. What is more, in order to make sure we understand the meaning of every word, the foreign teacher uses plenty of graphics and sometimes even his own vivid body language to “act out” the sentences. Whenever I see this, I am reminded of how diligent the teacher is, and how grateful I am for a good education! Seeing that my teacher puts in 110% effort when teaching, I know I must not disappoint them, and have to put in 110% myself, as the best way to thank them is with excellent results. Moreover, after three months of studying and living under the teachers’ care, I have overcome shyness and timidity. Carrying a conversation with foreign teachers has also become more and more comfortable. Regardless of English or Chinese pre-class lectures, I feel confident coming to the stage to express my ideas and demonstrate my ability. I can't believe that these last short three months have allowed me to make such a big improvement.
Trust, teamwork, cooperation, and being proud of your unique talents! At Maple Leaf, the teachers are not only lively and fun during class, they also pay a great deal of attention to our extracurricular life and in ensuring that every student participates in their favorite club activities. We not only have dozens of clubs, but the school also organizes larger trips beyond the campus, such as going to Disneyland! Just two days ago, our junior high school also had an intense basketball game. Although I was a substitute basketball player, I too was pumped with excitement and felt that I was shouldering the team’s collective honor and responsibility. On the court, I trained rigorously. When I fell, I climbed right back up and practiced more, I barely even felt tired. Before the game, the players in our class shouted "Class Three must win!" and everyone's heart clenched a little tighter, adrenaline running along our sweat. Looking at the hard-working players on the field, the female classmates screamed and cheered fervently, I felt like I was riding on my classmates’ waves of passion. Finally, with the joint efforts of everyone, our class won! Everyone was so happy as they held on to each other. This is happiness I have never felt before! All of this let me instantly understand that mutual trust and unity are the foundation of all victories.
Being able to stand on my own two feet is a must before self-improvement. Coming to Maple Leaf, I also left my home for the first time to begin my own independent journey. It has taught me how to organize my own belongings, but also how to effectively manage my own time to both work and play. I also learned how to live in harmony with my roommates and how to accommodate others. I believe that at Maple Leaf, where the teachers and students make up a big family full of love and compassion, I will work harder to become a better version of myself!
Shanghai Maple Leaf is the place where each of us can fly our dreams!
